The Nepal driving rules book.

Everything a learner needs in one place — the road rules that keep Nepal moving, and the traffic signs you will meet on every route. Built for your first lesson and your licence test alike.

Road rules · यातायात नियम

Know the rules before you turn the key.

On the road

  • Drive on the LEFT side of the road and overtake only from the right when it is safe.
  • Always wear your seat belt; front and rear passengers should be belted too.
  • A helmet is compulsory for both the rider and pillion on two-wheelers.
  • Keep a safe following distance — allow at least a two-second gap in normal conditions.
  • Use indicators before every turn, lane change or overtake.
  • Dip your headlights for oncoming traffic; use only the horn where it is permitted.

Documents to carry

  • A valid driving licence for the vehicle category you are driving.
  • The vehicle registration certificate (Bluebook / Lalpurja).
  • Valid third-party insurance for the vehicle.
  • Proof of paid road tax and, where applicable, route permit.
  • Produce these to a traffic officer on request.

Safety & prohibitions

  • Never drink and drive — Nepal enforces a zero-tolerance limit for drivers.
  • Do not use a mobile phone while driving; use a hands-free device only if you must.
  • Do not carry passengers or load beyond the vehicle's permitted capacity.
  • Give way to pedestrians at zebra crossings and to emergency vehicles.
  • Obey the traffic police officer's hand signals — they override the signals and signs.
  • Stop completely at STOP signs and red lights; slow and yield at GIVE WAY signs.
